88 key, hammer-action, midi keyboard showdown

June 1st, 2005

I’ve been looking for an additional midi keyboard controller. Initially, I wanted to get the M-Audio Keystation 88 Pro but found many poor reviews on this keyboard. After searching around, I came across some keyboards that look very promising:

CME UF8
Studiologic VMK-188

The CME UF8 and VMK-188 have monophonic aftertouch, yet the M-Audio Keystation has no aftertouch.

Aftertouch is a feature, which I’m just now learning about, which allows the player to push on the keys after striking and holding them down to manipulate the sound. Here are some good definitions of aftertouch:

Google Definitions of Aftertouch

I’ll let you know which, if either of these, I choose to get.

Yes, the ostrich egg contains the largest cell in existence

June 1st, 2005

So I was at a BBQ lunch today and one of my co-workers was talking about the time he had eaten ostrich meat. I thought I’d add an interesting dimension to the conversation when I mentioned that the ostrich egg is the largest single cell in existence. I’d learned this a long time ago; that bird eggs are single cells.
Everyone at the table stopped eating and looked at me. They all were very suspicious of my claim. A table of very smart people telling you that you’re wrong is pretty convincing. Did I imagine this little fact? Were they right in saying that an egg is made up of lots of little, microscopic, cells? No no no, I just knew that I was right.
Well a quick google search proved me right:

One resource mentioned that:
The entire “yellow” of a chicken “egg” is actually a single cell, the oocyte. The clear part of the egg is protien the cells use as energy when dividing.

Blackcat FMOS music

May 22nd, 2005

I’ve been lucky enough to have some time to play with the members of Scribblin’. It’s a real pleasure. These guys rock. I’ll be putting up a bio page on my site once I get a photo of us. We’re presently practicing under the name Blackcat FMOS (Featuring Members of Scribblin’).

For now, I’ve posted some recordings from a practice. Most of it is just incomplete ideas that we may come back to and finish off as complete songs.

The tracks are listed down the right side of the page under Blackcat FMOS.

Enjoy!

Your weight at the equator vs one of the poles on Earth

April 7th, 2005

I was eating dinner and thought of a question:

What’s the weight difference of a body on the equator vs the poles on Earth?

I decided to use two different UNC library resources to help me answer this question. I used both the Instant Messanger buddies “undergradref” and “davisrefdesk”. These buddies are librarians waiting to help you answer your questions. I wanted to see how similar these buddies were.

The davisrefdesk was not as helpful as the undergradref. davisrefdesk walked me through accessing confusing online databases through the library’s website. I had to ask what to search for and they said “gravity”. That got me nowhere. I got the impression that they were annoyed with my question. They ended the chat with a suggestion to come to the library and check out a physics book. Unacceptible. If davisrefdesk wants folks to come to them rather than google, they should be prepared to deliver a quick answer to my question. Once they do that, they can follow up with more elaborate sources of information on the subject, like physics textbooks.

undergradref was EXCELLENT. I asked my question and within 5 minutes they sent me a link to a Cornell webpage answering it in detail. I think they would have answered more quickly but they were interupted at the desk during the chat.

I’ve been using undergradref for months now to answer different questions I come up with. They have always been helpful and quick. I thought I’d try davisrefdesk to see how well the folks at Davis Library were emulating the Undergraduate Library service. I’ll have to test it out some more to see if I get consistent results back from davisrefdesk.

So, what IS your weight difference between the equator and the poles on Earth?

CVS GUI for Mac OS X

April 5th, 2005

So I’ve been looking for a stable, easy-to-use, CVS GUI for Mac OS X. Here are some I’ve ran across:

MacCVS – http://www.wincvs.org/
CVL – http://sente.epfl.ch/software/cvl/
MacCVSClient – http://www.heilancoo.net/MacCVSClient/

I downloaded all of these programs and the only one which I could get working was MacCVSClient. It turns out to have a nice interface as well. MacCVS required some python libraries that I had trouble installing. And CVL had a clumsy interface. I was able to specify my remote CVS repository, but it could never authenticate to it.

MacCVSClient was a breeze to configure for my remote repository. It effortlessly connected over SSH2. I had no problem checking out my project, and when I edited files in my local sandbox it was very easy to commit them to the repository. Overall, MacCVSClient seems to be what I was looking for. Oh yeah, it’s free. Nice.

Setting up a digital signature and encryption in Apple Mail (mail.app)

April 5th, 2005

I’ve recently been investigating digital signatures and encryption for my email. I use Apple Mail, or mail.app, for my email client. After much searching, I think that this is the best instruction page yet:

Now, if I can just get Kerberos authentication to my imap and smtp server working!

More music from Sharks Like Tea

April 5th, 2005

I just moved two more songs I’m working on over to joehungry. They are Soft Speak and Without You. Again, these are works in progress. I’m hoping to get my buddy Paul Coleman to lay down some drum beats to them. I think it would sound much better than the drum loops I’m using now.

Some Sharks Like Tea music

Apple cripples iTunes with latest upgrade

March 31st, 2005

UPDATE: Possible fix to the 5 different users each day limitation.

If I were you, I would think twice before upgrading to iTunes 4.7.1.30. After I upgraded to this version, playlists I try to connect to over our LAN report that:

The shared music library “foo” accepts only five different users each day. Please try again later.

iTunes has, in the past, limited sharing to 5 users at a time, but not 5 users per day. Now, all my favorite playlists that folks share are virtually unaccessible. They all are displaying this error (and I checked them at 7:15am this morning!).

I re-read the click through EULA that accompanied the iTunes upgrade and I couldn’t find any mention of this new limitation. Is this legal? Perhaps there is wording in the EULA that allows these types of changes without the need to notify the end-user?

Is the RIAA worried that their sales will decrease if iTunes users can easily listen to music over iTunes shares instead of buying it? Maybe. If so, this hurts folks like me who are sharing out my own music. Music that I own. Music that I have performed and recorded myself.

I am thinking that this new restriction in iTunes would be like allowing only 5 unique folks to use a photocopier per day, because it can be used to duplicate copyrighted material. That doesn’t sound like it would go over too well at the office. iTunes sharing is very similar. It can be used to distribute copyrighted material, but it can also be used to copy and distribute non-copyrighted material, like my songs.

Interesting. I’ll have to think more about this.
